Caramel Date Frappe

by Tansy Boggon

A refreshing dairy-free, naturally caramel-flavoured frappe recipe that can be whipped up in minutes.

Now, I admit that this recipe is not exactly a frappe, nor is it caramel. However, I’m not sure what else to call it. It is somewhat like a caramel frappe, but I wouldn’t be able to fool anyone that it is the real thing. No.

It does have a sweet milkiness and is refreshing and delicious on a hot summer’s day. Trust me, it’s not for drinking in the winter at all, and thus why I haven’t made it as frequently since moving to New Zealand. No, this is the sort of drink that will give you brain freeze if drunk too fast, and it will definitely cool you down.

It’s a drink that could be a snack on a scorching afternoon or enjoyed before or after physical activity that requires extra hydration. Or you could enjoy it on any warm evening when you want something sweet but not too heavy.

I think it best you give it a try and determine for yourself!

A dairy-free frappe

Of course, you could make a dairy-free frappe with any alternative milk. However, I’ve made this frappe without any type of milk.

The milkiness comes from dates and tahini blended with water. The flavour of tahini with dates and maple syrup becomes caramel-like in taste, and thus is a crucial component of this drink.

Try as a peanut butter and chocolate frappe

However, I have also tried the recipe by swapping the tahini with peanut butter and adding a tablespoon of cacao powder for a chocolate peanut butter frappe, which is definitely a variation I’d recommend if you’re looking for more refreshing sweet recipes.

Ice, ice baby

It is the ratio of ice to the date-tahini syrup that makes this drink frappe-like and refreshing. However, if your blender is not all that powerful or you don’t want it to be so icy that you can eat it with a spoon, you’re welcome to switch some of the ice for water.

I like a drink that I need a spoon, but each to their own. Over to you to give it a try. I hope you enjoy.

    blended mixture in thermomix
  • Scrape down the sides and taste test.
  • Add the maple syrup and a little extra if it's not sweet enough for you.
  • Then add the ice and blend on high speed until you have a slushy consistency. Enjoy.

Notes

Try a Chocolate Peanut Butter Frappe

Switch the tahini with peanut butter and add a tablespoon of cacao powder.

Don’t have Medjool dates?

You can use other dates if you don’t have Medjool. However, most other varieties will require soaking in the water for 30 – 60 minutes before blending.  It will also depend a bit on the power of your blender. So, experiment to find what works with what you have available.

Want more recipes with tahini?

Often when people purchase tahini they can’t think of any other uses for it, other than hummus. I hope that this recipe has given you another idea. I’ll be sharing more recipes with tahini including caramel filled dates and salad dressing in the future (just search tahini on this site). However, if you’re wanting to use the jar of tahini you have right now, check out my recipes for Vegan ‘Muesli’ Slice. Plus, my recipes for Beetroot Hummus and Sundried Tomato Hummus.
