Kiwifruit salsa is a zesty and colourful salsa, delicious with BBQ meats, tempeh or salmon.
It is a quick and easy side dish that looks delectable and has a tanginess that compliments protein dishes well.
Ingredients for kiwifruit salsa
The ingredients for this simple and fresh salsa include:
- kiwifruit
- mango
- red capsicum
- fresh mint, coriander or flat leaf parsley
- spring onions
- lemon or lime juice
- extra virgin olive oil
- lemon or orange zest
- salt
Vary your salsa flavour
I try to offer alternatives for my recipes so you can make the dishes across different seasons and countries.
For example, mangos are imported to New Zealand. So, they may not always be a feasible option.
However, there are alternative summer fruits that would work well in this salsa, such as ripe:
- peaches
- nectarines
- apricots
I also provide the substitution option of pomegranate seeds for red capsicum in the recipe. This option is primarily for the vibrant red colour the capsicum offers in contrast to the green kiwifruit and orange mango, more so than taste.
So, don’t feel limited to the recipe. Get creative. Taste test as you go to check that the flavours work together.
Another addition that would be delicious in or alongside this salsa is avocado, either diced or sliced.
Is it salsa or salad?
“Salsa” literally means “sauce”. It is generally served as a condiment over eggs, fajitas, grilled beef, roast chicken or quesadillas. You can even enjoy it as a dip.
Salsas can be prepared as a cooked sauce, typically with tomatoes, onions and chilli or made fresh with spices and lime.
Salsa can be smooth or chunky, thick or thin, mild or hot.
The popularity of salsa means that it has diversified and can include ingredients such as papaya, mango, plantains, beans and corn. Thus, it may be less “sauce-like” and more condiment, as with this kiwifruit salsa.
How to serve kiwifruit salsa
Serve kiwifruit salsa with grilled or baked salmon or other fish, BBQ meats or marinated tempeh or tofu. You could even try it with fish or tofu tacos or burritos.
Here, I’ve served kiwifruit salsa over honey-glazed salmon.

Notes
Storage
It is best served immediately as the kiwifruit will become mushy and glassy on cutting and refrigeration.Love mangos?
If you love mangos and have access to them, you may also like to try mango sticky rice or a mango smoothie.
I make a smoothie with frozen mango, fresh pineapple, coconut milk, water and a splash of lime or lemon juice. It is so refreshing!
