WEIGHT STIGMA
Weight stigma is the result of weight bias, which is the preference for a certain body weight, shape or size. Weight stigma involves labelling a person as overweight or unhealthy based on appearance, without consideration of actual health markers or the assumption that they are the cause of their health concerns.
We can experience weight stigma through others comments or policies that implicitly show a preference for certain body weight and size. However, we can also feel weight stigma in the way we perceive our own body.
Although sometimes used (ineffectively) as a motivator, weight stigma does more to perpetuate shame and blame than inspire self-care; and has been shown to negatively impact health, independent of weight.
